Over the last few years Docker River (Kaltukatjara) 500kms west of Alice Springs has implemented a comprehensive youth and family program which has reduced substance abuse and improved child health. In this episode we hear from some of the key participants.

Mt Theo 1 - Peggy Brown Nampijinpa spoken in Warlpiri.

eggy Brown is one of the founders of the Yuendumu, Mt Theo Substance Misuse Aboriginal Corporation which is well known for having stopped petrol sniffing at Yuendumu 300kms north west of Alice Springs. In this episode Peggy tells the story of her involvement in the program. She also offers advice to other communities in how to take action on petrol sniffing.

t Theo 2 - Johnny Miller Japangardi (Hooker Creek) Andrew Stojanovski Jangala (Yakajirri) spoken in Warlpiri and English.

he Yuendumu, Mt Theo Substance Misuse Aboriginal Corporation (Mt Theo Program) started in Yuendumu 300 kms northwest of Alice Springs over a decade ago and has been fundamental in reducing substance misuse amongst young people in the community. Yakajirri and Hooker Creek were founders of the Mt Theo Program and in this episode talk about the program and what can be learnt from it.

t Theo 3 - Ubik Jupurrurla, Alan Dickson Jungarrayi and Jean Brown Napanangka and various community members spoken in Warlpiri and English.

n Central Australia the Mt Theo Program stands as a prime example of how remote Indigenous communities with comprehensive support can take action in relation to substance abuse. In this episode three current workers on the program recount their experiences and hear some of the speeches made at the 10th anniversary celebrations of the program in April 2004 in Yuendumu.

ntjartnama/ Tjupi Band - Elva Cook and Sammy Butcher Spoken In Arrente, Luritja and English.

lva Cook and her husband who is now deceased looked after troubled young people for many years at their family outstation Intjartnama 100kms west of Alice Springs. In this episode Elva tells the story of Intjartnama and discusses some of the current issues for services and families in Central Australia. We also hear from Sammy Butcher of Papunya. Sammy’s music with the Warumpi Band and recently Tjupi Band is well known around the world. In this episode he talks about his work and his song Piturlu Wanti (Don’t Sniff Petrol)

arol is the Executive Director of Nimkee NupiGawagan Healing Centre a Solvent Addictions Treatment Centre for First Nations youth in Canada. Carol is also chair of the Canadian National Youth Solvent Abuse Committee (YSAC). In this episode she talks about the situation with solvents in Canada and some of the good work that is being done.

polera Outstation - Mavis Malbunka and Mike Harries spoken in Western Arrente, and English.

avis Malbunka is an Arrente woman who looked after children with petrol sniffing and other issues at Ipolera Outstation approximately 150kms West of Alice Springs from 2004-2006. In this episode we hear from Mavis during and after this time, we also hear from Mike Harries the principal of nearby Hermannsburg school who helped set up the program.

Ilpurla (Ilamurta) - Barry Abbott, Leo Abbott and various young men. Spoken in Arrente, Pitjantjatjara, Pintubi-Luritja and English.

arry Abbott is an Arrente Cattleman who has taken in young people with substance abuse issues for over 40 years. Young men who stay with Barry are given a chance at a new life. In this episode we hear about Barry and his families work.

erspectives on Solvents work in Canada - Leo Abbott, Jean Brown, Robert McMahon spoken in Western Arrente, Warlpiri and English.

n March 2005 Leo Abbott (Ilpurla) and Jean Brown (Mt Theo) travelled with CAYLUS staff to attend a conference in Canada and visit some of the Solvent Addictions Treatment programs being run for first nations youth. In this episode Jean and Leo talk about the work being done in Canada and contrast it with the work they are doing in Central Australia. We also hear from Robert McMahon a long-term worker at the White Buffalo Treatment Centre in Sturgeon Lake Canada.
